中国的戏曲起源于上古原始社会的民间舞蹈。
原始歌舞的特点是全民性，人们生活在一个有血缘关系的群体中，崇奉着共同的祖先，欢度节日、庆祝丰收和祈祷等活动，都是伴随着歌舞进行的。国家形成以后，歌舞向两极分化，一部分成为国家祭典仪式中的重要组成部分，一部分则向着驱鬼除疫的方向演化，反映了当时社会愚昧、落后，人民渴望生命安全。
